Separate rank from value
In this site’s calculator, A is rank one. A-2-3 of one suit can form a run; Q-K-A cannot. J, Q and K remain different ranks even though each is worth ten when left as deadwood.
Read the cards, not only the total
Two queens do not make a three-card set. Three unrelated ten-value cards are not automatically a meld. A pair can be a useful unfinished group during play but still contributes deadwood in the calculator’s current arrangement.
A quick exercise
Write A♣, 2♣, 3♣ on paper, then replace 2♣ with K♣. The first group is consecutive from the low ace; the second is not. Next compare J♣, Q♣, K♣ with J♣, J♦, J♥: one is a run, the other a set.
Check the agreement
These tools use a single standard deck without wild cards. Do not paste a joker-based Indian Rummy hand into this calculator and interpret the result as a valid declaration check.
